Michael Hughes Hand-Builds His Own PhantomFocus™ MixRoom™ in Nashville

– Multi-talented Nashville music scene veteran transforms his career once again by tapping into his carpentry skills while handcrafting a PhantomFocus MixRoom guided by Carl Tatz Design® (CTD)

Nashville, TN – Veteran songwriter, musician, music publisher, studio and tour musician and engineer/producer Michael Hughes hand-built his own PhantomFocus MixRoom™ at Hartwell Studios in Nashville, TN, with the aid of Carl Tatz Design® LLC and the PhantomFocus™ System.

Hughes has had a long and varied career (Bio) in and around Nashville's dynamic music scene, and one day he made up his mind to fulfill his dream of having his own studio that would allow him to stay close to home and family. Hughes contacted CTD™ and arranged a demo appointment after having heard by word of mouth about the PhantomFocus System and MixRoom. Once he experienced the PFS, a bell went off in his head as he suddenly realized what he could have and the future attached to it.

“As a small studio owner, mixing and shaping the bass was always a guess. Mix twice, check it in your car, come back and mix again, check it on your iPod, etc. Sometimes I got lucky, and it was great; more often though, it wasn’t. So I started mixing at the big, expensive studios in town. And I’d end up doing the same thing,” explains Hughes. “So imagine my surprise and relief when I realized that with the PFS I could really hear what was happening in the low end BETTER than any of those excellent studios. And I could have it in my basement!”

CTD was hired to present a detailed plan with construction directives for a custom PhantomFocus MixRoom, which created the vessel for Hughes' PhantomFocus System that would later be installed by the CTD team upon completion. Carl Tatz Signature Series Acoustic Modules by Auralex® including the CTD Acoustic Lens™ wall treatment were specified throughout the project. And in this case Hughes’ carpentry skills and construction prowess enabled him to act as his own contractor.

CTD specifies symmetry in its MixRoom designs, not only acoustically but also visually. This was achieved cleverly through the use of custom cut mirrors behind the CTD Acoustic Lens™ on the left MixRoom wall that mimicked the glass bricks on the right wall (see photo).

The results have been stellar, and the PhantomFocus MixRoom at Hartwell Studios has more than realized its owner’s goals. Hughes comments, “The PhantomFocus™ MixRoom™ is the most beneficial investment I’ve ever made in my recording career. Not only are my mixes better, but also clients are blown away by the sound of their music being played with a clarity and accuracy that they’ve never experienced before. I don’t ever want to mix without a PFS again, EVER!”

About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.

There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.

Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.

Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
