Nashville, TN: Carl Tatz Design® LLC was hired by John and Leah O’Connor to design one of the firm’s award-winning PhantomFocus™ MixRooms for their musical family in Olympia, Washington. The recently completed facility features the full palette of PhantomFocus Precision Monitoring Instruments, including a high-end PFM UHD-1000 Monitor System, custom Argosy Carl Tatz Edition Dual 15K Workstation and Producers Desk, a pair of Silver Mesh Porcelain eChairs™, PhantomFocus Monitor Stands and a pair of PFM ICE Cube-12 Subwoofers.
The O'Connors were uniquely qualified to be involved in the aesthetic surface selections for their PF MixRoom finishes, being owners of I-5 Design/Build specializing in entertainment venues throughout the country. In this instance they chose to go with a natural maple finish for the floor, trim and glass door frames and had their woodworking shop create the custom natural maple front wall diffusion surface per CTD specifications. The selected fabrics for the Carl Tatz Signature Series™ Acoustic Modules by Auralex® and stretch fabric systems were very light shaded, contributing to the comfortably calm vibe. Stretch fabric track system provided by Whisper Walls®.
Another feature was the custom stained-glass exterior window in the spacious overdub booth, which sees as many violins and cellos played by this Pacific Northwest “Von Trapp” family as it does guitars and vocals.
Located in a new addition to the O’Connor home, the MixRoom (positioned directly above the master bedroom) was acoustically isolated from the rest of the house by employing extensive room-within-a-room construction techniques.
CTD employed its full vault of proprietary architectural acoustic tools to maximize the performance of the high-end PFM UHD-1000 Monitor system. These included the side-wall installed Acoustic Lens™, rear-wall installed Axial Mode Absorber™ and front-corner installed subwoofer module bass traps. Fit and finish were aided by a custom application of Carl Tatz Signature Series™ Pro Panels by Auralex® Acoustics.
“This was a particularly impressive project due to the owner’s enthusiastic investment to make this PhantomFocus MixRoom a beautiful musical sanctuary for the entire family to enjoy both technically and aesthetically,” comments studio designer Carl Tatz.
The O'Connors comment, “We are extremely happy with our new studio - thanks to the entire CTD team. The room is an incredibly inspiring space for hearing, composing, arranging, and recording music, and the PFM UHD-1000 Monitors enable us to hear things in music we’ve never heard before! Our entire family, down to our 6-year-old son, as well as many of our friends, are enjoying the space very much and we are grateful to Carl Tatz Design for making it such an enjoyable experience.”

About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.
There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.
Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.
Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
