LIGHT IMPRESSIONS: A CELEBRATION OF iPHONE® PHOTOGRAPHY NOW OPEN AT STUDIO B. IN ALYS BEACH, FLORIDA

— First-ever digital iPhone® photography exhibit of this magnitude features photography from 40 international iPhoneographers displayed on 40 Apple iPad 2’s —

ALYS BEACH, FLORIDA, June 22, 2011Studio b., located in Alys Beach, Florida, officially kicked off its third anniversary celebration on June 10, 2011, with the unveiling of the new exhibition series Rock, Paper, Digital … the b. turns 3. Among the dozens of artists and works featured, a centerpiece of the series is the special exhibit Light Impressions: A Celebration of iPhone® Photography, which features the curated work of 40 iPhoneographers from around the world, showcased on 40 iPad 2 units. This is the first iPhone photography exhibit of this magnitude in the world.

“This is truly a groundbreaking showcase, as never before has iPhone photography been exhibited on this scale and with level of deference,” states studio b. founder/owner and world-renowned photographer Colleen Duffley. “Three years ago, our very first creative showcase at studio b. was a global camera-phone event. To take the idea to the next level with an iPhoneography showcase demonstrates the extent to which studio b. is dedicated to growing and changing with technology, and it is a very fitting part of the commemoration of our third anniversary.”

With an iPad 2 assigned to each artist, each unit features 13 photos from a particular artist’s collection, looping at different intervals. Another iPad 2 is used to stream the entire show online at studio b.’s website. The iPad 2’s were made available through the generous work of studio b. patrons Steve and Lynn Dugas. Noted Duffley, “With our streaming capabilities, everyone can enjoy this exhibit, whether or not they can attend in person, a fact that is in keeping with our mantra that studio b. is an experience, not merely a place.”

In keeping with the themes of Rock, Paper, Digital, which has been conceived as a showcase of the entire range of artistic work, from primitive methods and mediums through the most contemporary, Duffley seized the opportunity to add a touch of primitive to the Light Impressions exhibit. The metal structure on which the 40 iPad 2 units are mounted was made of materials recovered from the wreckage of 1995’s Hurricane Opal, and in fact had blown off a local restaurant. “It seems very appropriate to me – iPhone photography in particular has a ‘found-art’ sensibility to it, and what better way to frame it than on repurposed materials?” notes Duffley.

Created by Duffley with organizational help from Jill Gaupin, a South Walton, Florida-based iPhone photographer, Light Impressions was conceived out of Duffley’s enthusiasm for iPhone photography and the belief that this new artistic medium positions everyone with a desire to express their creativity on a level playing field. “iPhone photography is still an emerging art form,” adds Duffley. “I know people are going to be astounded when they see what is being done in the movement. And all on an iPhone – from capturing the image through post-processing. It is really mind-blowing and wonderful. Several attendees have commented that they feel like they’re seeing the future right here at studio b. And it’s a very pure art form – far more about the creativity than about expensive gear or intricate techniques.”

“I was thrilled when Colleen approached me about helping her take on the task of an iPhone photography exhibit of this magnitude at studio b.,” stated Gaupin. “I have always admired Colleen’s unparalleled vision to channel her creativity and her desire to share it with others. We are incredibly fortunate to have studio b. in our area. To be able to be a part of this exhibition, working with Colleen and celebrating my passion, and to participate with fellow iPhone photographers whom I admire from all corners of the globe, is a remarkable opportunity.”

The exhibition will be on display through at least July 2011, and will be open for viewing Thursdays through Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and by appointment all other times. Special evening exhibition events are planned; check the studio b. web site for more information. There are also plans to tour the exhibit – interested parties should contact studio b. by phone.
