The Bakery to Expand on Busy 2017 with Another Banner Year in 2018
— The Bakery principal Eric Boulanger and his team made quite a splash throughout 2017, with award nominations, high profile album projects, educational outreach and much more, and 2018 is set to be even bigger —
LOS ANGELES, CA, March 6, 2018 – Mastering facility The Bakery will celebrate its third anniversary in 2018 and shows no signs of slowing down after a banner 2017. The Bakery opened up shop at the Sony Pictures Studios lot in 2015, and in the years since, The Bakery mastering engineer and principal Eric Boulanger and with the rest of his team have been not only some of the most in-demand mastering engineers working today, but also a prominent fixture at industry events, sharing expertise and promoting the art and science of high-resolution audio. The remainder of 2018 will see Boulanger and his newly expanded team turn it up a notch, with a busy itinerary of industry panels, educational outreach, and of course dozens of top mastering projects to hit the lathe.
The Bakery’s 2017 mastering schedule resulted in many acclaimed singles and albums, either mastered for digital, vinyl or both, running the entire gamut from pop releases to video game soundtracks. Highlights include Diana Krall’s Turn Up the Quiet, N.E.R.D.’s NO_ONE EVER REALLY DIES, Serena Ryder’s Electric Love, Randy Newman’s Dark Matter and score for Cars 3, Barry Manilow’s This Is My Town, Lindsey Stirling’s Warmer in the Winter, Hans Zimmer & Benjamin Wallfisch’s score for Blade Runner 2049, and many more.
Multiple clients and projects from The Bakery’s 2017 roster were nominated or received wins at the recent 60th GRAMMY® Awards. The album Elwan from acclaimed African folk fusion group Tinariwen was nominated for “Best World Music Album”; Kaleo’s single “No Good” was nominated for “Best Rock Performance”; and the score for La-La Land won “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.” Additionally, several others are on the short list of nominations for the upcoming Juno Awards. Krall’s Turn Up the Quiet is nominated for “Vocal Jazz Album of the Year” and “Jack Richardson Producer of the Year” for Krall and the late Tommy Lipuma; Broken Social Scene is nominated for “Group of the Year”; Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself resulted in nominations for “Artist of the Year,” “Adult Alternative Album of the Year,” and “Songwriter of the Year” for Downie and Kevin Drew; Shawn Hook is nominated for “Juno Fan Choice Award”; and Serena Ryder’s Electric Love EP has resulted in a nomination for “Jack Richardson Producer of the Year” for Thomas “Tawgs” Salter and Mike Wise. The nomination for Downie, a longtime collaborator with Boulanger/The Bakery, is bittersweet, as the acclaimed Tragically Hip frontman recently succumbed to his battle with cancer – Downie has been mourned by the whole industry and his family of ardent fans, especially Boulanger and all others who were lucky enough to work with him over his long career. Boulanger notes, “The Tragically Hip are an essential part of Canada’s music culture, and this project took on a special meaning for me, as I knew it would be part of Gord’s legacy for years to come.”
The year also saw prominent appearances from Boulanger and/or associate mastering engineer Jett Galindo at the following industry events: the 2017 NAMM Show in Anaheim and the 2017 CES Convention in Las Vegas (both in January), the 142nd AES Convention in Berlin in May, the 2017 Summer NAMM Show in Nashville in July, and the Making Vinyl Conference in Detroit in November. At the NAMM Show, Galindo took part in a series of Mentoring Sessions presented by SoundGirls.org, as well as a panel “Opportunities for Women in Media Technology.” At the same event, Boulanger served as co-presenter at the 32nd TEC Awards. At AES142 in Berlin, Boulanger was part of the panel “Mastering Workflows.” Boulanger also served as part of the Vinyl Mastering panel at Summer NAMM – a trip that also allowed him the opportunity to speak as a guest lecturer at Nashville’s Blackbird Academy. The Making Vinyl conference saw Boulanger serving as moderator for the panel The Fine Art of Mastering & Lathe Cutting.
“The Bakery had our best year yet in 2017, and 2018 will be even bigger,” remarks Boulanger. “I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished since we’ve been in operation, and the hits keep coming. We’ve recently expanded The Bakery staff, including Jaymes Quirino as our Studio Director, and all of us love what we do. We work very hard to deliver on these projects with professionalism and fun.
