The Audio-Technica ATUC-50 Digital Discussion System Lets
Sweet Jean Media Services Scale Big

— Sweet Jean Media Services’ nine staffers can cost-effectively deploy any combination of up to 24 ATUC-50DU Discussion Units that assure meetings have clear, intelligible audio for each use —

STOW, OH, April 25, 2019 Sweet Jean Media Services is a multi-purpose multimedia company that specializes in scalable corporate event production, audio-visual rentals, live sound mixing, post-production audio and related services. One of its ongoing recent projects has been as the meeting-audio provider for a series of weekly medical advisory board conclaves across the country that needed consistently clear, intelligible and reliable audio for meeting participants, who could number as many as two dozen medical specialists per meeting. Thanks to the ATUC-50 Digital Discussion System from Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology for over 50 years, Sweet Jean Media Services’ Denver-based team can easily scale to cover every meeting, from the smallest to the largest.

Sweet Jean Media Services now owns two ATUC-50 systems, purchased through vendor Pro Acoustics USA, each comprising a dozen ATUC-50DU Discussion Units and an ATUC-50CU rack-mountable power and control unit. These systems are easily transportable and deployable, says Sweet Jean Media Services owner Doug Murphy, making the ATUC-50 what he calls, “Our most profitable purchase ever!”

The ATUC-50 Digital Discussion System can assure excellent sound for all types of meetings, panels and other multisource events. The traveling medical advisory boards, which hit the road for as long as 18 weeks at a time as they seek a broad range of critical input and opinion from leading specialists nationally, are a perfect example. Sweet Jean Media Services technicians ship the ATUC-50 system via cargo in its own robust, custom-foam-lined transport case, which includes the ATUC-50CU, ATUC-50DUs, and the ATUC-M43H and ATUC-M58H microphones specifically designed for the system. On site, the entire system is set up quickly, and features such as automated gain control (AGC), mic gain and mic EQ settings are available for each individual discussion unit. The control unit can also be programmed to work via Web Remote Control, which enables the user to configure and operate the system from a computer, tablet or mobile device. The ATUC-M43H and ATUC-M58H gooseneck microphones each feature a hypercardioid condenser element with double-layer pop filter, a remote-controlled LED ring, 3-pin XLRM-type connector with rubber cap to prevent mechanical vibration, and RFI-shielding technology.

“The ATUC-50 has been the best investment we’ve ever made,” says Murphy, who estimates that each ATUC-50 package has saved him at least $2,000 versus the cost of the components individually. “And as a package, everything works together perfectly, which makes it that much more cost effective.” Murphy especially likes the fact that he can control each individual microphone separately, rather than having to apply any necessary processing such as EQ to a group of zoned microphones, as other discussion systems compel users to do. “As a result, I can adjust each microphone unit for the nature of each speaker,” he says. “For instance, I can apply the exact amount of sensitivity control to each microphone, to adjust for speakers who talk loudly or those who are quiet or tend to sit back two feet away from the microphone without raising the entire panel’s volume. It gives us an incredible amount of very precise control over the audio.”

Murphy says more ATUC-50 systems are likely in Sweet Jean Media Services’ future. “We’re up to 24 units now and we’re looking to grow further,” he says. (A combined total of 100 discussion units, integration units and interpretation units may be connected to a control unit.) “The ATUC-50 always works right out of the box. Reliable, sounds great, and easy to use. I haven’t been this excited about a piece of equipment in a long time.”
