ENGINEER/PRODUCER/GUITARIST DAVE BRYSON CHOOSES GENELEC 8240A DSP MONITORS TO REDEEM A CHALLENGING LISTENING AND MIXING ENVIRONMENT

— Noted engineer/producer and guitarist for the Counting Crows comes to rely on Genelec 8240A Bi-amplified Active Monitors for mixing in his home studio —

NATICK, MA, March 23, 2009 — Dave Bryson, producer/engineer and guitarist for the Counting Crows as well as a longtime Genelec user, recently upgraded the monitoring in his home studio to feature a pair of Genelec 8240A Bi-Amplified Active DSP Monitors.

Like many producers these days, Bryson decided that the convenience of a home studio was preferable, despite its sonic drawbacks: “I have a family, so personally I love being at home,” noted Bryson. “The mixing room has a really cool vibe, sort of like a dungeon – it’s killer. But by itself it doesn’t sound great. I mean, it was built as a room, not a studio. The walls are perfectly parallel and there’s some concrete. So I loved the room but wasn’t loving the sounds I was getting at first.”

Bryson tried a number of fixes to improve the sound quality in his mixing room, going through three different sets of monitors, two parametric EQ’s and numerous variations of acoustical treatment. He even hired a professional acoustics consultant, but none of these approaches cured the sonic problems. He eventually borrowed a pair of Genelec 8240As from his favorite pro audio dealer, San Francisco-based Cutting Edge. “Immediately they just blew my mind,” he stated. “The Genelecs really did solve the problem. I know that speakers can’t fix a lousy room, but these things have come pretty darned close!”

Aside from his Genelecs, Bryson’s studio setup includes a Digidesign® C24® Control Surface and a number of pieces of outboard gear. Before finding mainstream success with Counting Crows in the mid-1990s, Bryson worked regularly as an engineer, and he’s recently jumped back into it, quickly learning the tricks of mixing in the digital age. “My passion is mixing – that’s the majority of the work that I do in the studio here. I’m working on a Counting Crows thing now, but I’ve also been mixing this local jazzy/folk artist named Megan Slankard, and I just mixed another local alternative artist named Aidan Hawken.”

Key to the 8240A’s success in Bryson’s studio is the proprietary GLM™ (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager™) software with AutoCal™ automated acoustical system-wide self-calibration algorithm. “The GLM software does an amazing job at making my room sound good,” stated Bryson. “Not only are the frequencies more balanced, but the imaging has improved significantly. The sweet spot grew in a major way with the software versus what I had before.”
