GENELEC MONITORING KEEPS THE SOUND UNDER CONTROL FOR MUSIC MAYHEM ENTERTAINMENT

— Los Angeles production company and studio chooses Genelec 1032A Bi-Amplified Active Monitors and the Genelec 7070 Active Subwoofer to assure full-frequency response at any volume —

NATICK, MA, April 21, 2010 — Seeking to differentiate itself at a time when more music than ever before is being produced, Music Mayhem Entertainment has made careful choices. This extends to the artists they work with, such as vocalist Shanica Knowles, also known for her role as Amber Addison opposite Miley Cyrus on the hit teen show Hannah Montana; and producer/engineers such as Curtis “Sauce” Wilson, who has had a hand in the production and/or engineering for tracks by Brandy, Will Smith, Ne-Yo, Musiq Soulchild, Eric Benet, LeToya Luckett, Eminem and Toni Braxton, among others. And likewise, when it comes to Music Mayhem’s studio, only the best monitoring would do: a two-channel + subwoofer system from Genelec, the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology for more than three decades.

The Music Mayhem Studios monitoring system consists of a pair of Genelec 1032A Bi-Amplified Active Monitors and the Genelec 7070A Active Subwoofer. Music Mayhem Executive Producer Patrick McCook encountered Genelec monitoring in several top studios in the Los Angeles area, so when it came to establish his own facility, he chose the 1032A and 7070A components without hesitation. That was a decision heartily supported by Sauce, who has also enjoyed working on Genelec monitoring in other facilities, including the studio at Rondor, Universal Music’s publishing division. He was pleased to discover that Music Mayhem’s new Universal City facility, where he is now a freelance Producer and Chief Engineer, also is equipped with Genelecs, as well as other high-end gear such as an Avid Control|24 console and outboard processing including Neve EQs and a Universal Audio LA-2A compressor.

“This combination of speakers gives us everything we need,” says Sauce. “I know Patrick liked the sound of them, and I certainly do, too. The 7070A subwoofer is especially good in that it reproduces the low frequencies very, very well even at lower volumes, which we sometimes have to work at since the studio is in a multi-use building. But when you do kick them up loud, they maintain their consistency and accuracy. Pop, hip-hop and R&B are very bass-intense genres, but the Genelec monitors can keep up with anything we put through them.”

The Genelec 1032A is a two-way active monitoring system including magnetically shielded drivers, speaker enclosure, multiple power amplifiers and active low signal level crossover. Due to its compact size, this system is ideal for high power near field monitoring. Genelec’s unique Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™) Technology used provides excellent stereo imaging and frequency balance even in difficult acoustic environments. Versatile crossover controls allow for precise matching of the speaker system to different acoustic conditions. The system is very easy to use as only mains power and line level input signal are needed.

The Genelec 7070A Active Subwoofer is a powerful and precise bass monitoring tool for modern 6.1- or 5.1-channel Surround Sound or traditional stereo systems. With its 19-Hz lower cut-off frequency, high sound pressure output capability and versatile bass management systems, it can be adapted to all low frequency monitoring situations. The amplifier unit integrated into the cabinet contains active crossover filters, driver overload protection circuits and power amplifiers. The in-built bass management unit has six signal input and output channels, summed signal output connectors and LFE input equipped with a selectable 85/120 Hz lowpass filter and a 0 / +10dB LFE sensitivity switch. The Genelec Laminar Spiral™ (LSE™) bass reflex cabinet is made of sheet metal rolled into a spiral shape and clamped between thick MDF side panels. This construction technique provides excellent laminar flow characteristics with minimal turbulence noise and enables an optimal packing of a very long reflex tube into a small space.
