Multi-Platinum Award Winning Producer/Engineer Sylvia Massy Shares Her Thoughts on Genelec’s New 8351 Smart Active Monitors

NATICK, MA, November 28, 2017 — Acclaimed multi-platinum producer/engineer Sylvia Massy spent years behind the glass in the world of music production and built her discography with such legendary acts as Tool, Johnny Cash, Prince, System of a Down, Tom Petty, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and more. A stint working at L.A.’s Larrabee Sound brought her into the orbit of super-producer Rick Rubin, which led to dozens of other high-profile opportunities, including a residency at Sound City in the 1990s, where Sylvia’s Neve 8038 console provided the sonic backbone of dozens of legendary recordings from the era. Sylvia knows great gear and how it connects with her ears and a finished product, and a constant presence in her arsenal over the last few decades has been active monitors from Genelec.

Sylvia was first introduced to Genelec at Larrabee, where she used Genelec 1038A monitors – recalling them as “the best main speakers I’d ever heard before.” Years later, she still relies on Genelec, and owns several pairs. Recently she tried the award-winning 8351 Smart Active Studio Monitors – part of Genelec’s “The Ones” Series of Compact Coaxial Active Monitors – at her personal mix room in Oregon, known as The Terrarium.

Sylvia notes, “There is plenty of low end on the 8351’s, despite their compact size. This new generation of speakers – ‘The Ones’ – is really special because of the way they adapt to new environments. They have the SAM system, which is Smart Active Monitoring, which actually reads the room and adjusts for the room; it’s very simple. I was also surprised by how easy it was to set up these monitors. It was not complicated. With the 8351 monitors and Smart Active Monitoring, you can really work anywhere now. I’m excited to have a set of monitors that I can bring with me to new places.”

Genelec, the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology, is celebrating nearly 40 years of designing and manufacturing active loudspeakers for true and accurate sound reproduction. Genelec is credited with promoting the concept of active transducer technology. Since its inception in 1978, Genelec has concentrated its efforts and resources into creating active monitors with unparalleled sonic integrity. The result is an active speaker system that has earned global acclaim for its accurate imaging, extremely high acoustic output from small enclosures, true high-fidelity with low distortion, and deep, rich bass.

Genelec is also celebrating over 10 years of its Smart Active Monitoring™ technology, which allows studio monitors to be networked, configured and calibrated for the user’s specific acoustic environment. Each Smart Active Monitor or subwoofer is equipped with advanced internal DSP circuitry, which tightly integrates with the GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) software application, running on Mac or PC. GLM’s reference microphone kit allows the user’s acoustic environment to be analyzed, after which GLM’s AutoCal feature optimizes each Smart Active Monitor for level, distance delay, subwoofer crossover phase and room response equalization, with the option of further fine tuning by the user. By minimizing the room’s influence on the sound, Smart Active Monitors deliver an unrivalled reference, with excellent translation between rooms.
