Nashville, TN: Studio veteran Chris Freels, head engineer, producer and co-owner of Edmond, Oklahoma's The Music Group recording complex, recently chose to have Carl Tatz Design, TEC Award-Winning studio design firm and creator of the PhantomFocus System, install a Dual version of its acclaimed PhantomFocus monitoring system in The Music Group's studio A control room. Utilizing Yamaha NS10 near-fields and Dynaudio AIR 25 mid-fields, the two sets of monitors share the same laser-optimized and tuned sweet spot.
“To be honest, we were a little skeptical as to whether or not we were going to hear much of a difference” was the general pre-installation consensus of the staff of this very busy and client-diverse facility. Alongside Freels, staff includes producer/engineer/co-owner LG Hamilton, staff engineer and chief tech Bryce Zabric and studio manager Addie Rice.
Chris first experienced a PhantomFocus™ System (PFS™) at Upstairs Productions in Oklahoma City (operated by Ted Curtis, who had invited him over for a listen); Freels quickly realized something was up. “The first time I listened to the PFS I felt like I was in a recording studio for the first time,” he remarks.
Once The Music Group installed their new Neve Genesys console, Freels knew it was time to bump up the monitoring. “Now that The Music Group has its own Dual PFS, which includes the new PhantomFocus eChair™, the songs that I've been listening to for 30 years feel like I'm listening to them for the first time. Listening to music is new and fresh again, and mixing music is easier than ever. I hear width and depth like never before, so getting a mix right is a much quicker process. I never want to work without the PFS – thanks Carl!”

About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.
There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.
Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.
Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
