Recording Academy® Producers & Engineers Wing® releases 2025 Delivery Recommendations for Recorded Music Projects

New guidelines enhance workflow efficiency and metadata management for modern music production professionals

Santa Monica, Calif. (Nov. 19, 2024) — The Recording Academy® Producers & Engineers Wing® (P&E Wing) has officially released its 2025 Delivery Recommendations for Recorded Music Projects. This updated publication provides essential guidelines for managing media deliverables, documenting metadata, final delivery of master recordings, and organizing file workflows for today’s music professionals.

The new document — co-authored by committee chair Jeff Balding, Matt Hennessy, Sarah Jones, George Massenburg, Leslie Richter, Michael Romanowski, Justin D. Smith, and Paul Womack, along with P&E Wing Vice President Maureen Droney — outlines best practices designed to ensure efficient access, organization, and preservation of recorded music projects.

Key highlights of the redesigned 2025 recommendations include:

  • Facilitating the ability to recreate or repurpose final mixes: Clear access to all original mix elements, enabling the recreation of final mixes or reuse of recordings.
  • Folder hierarchy structures: Best practices for organizing and managing files through all stages of the creation and delivery process.
  • Suggestions for collecting and delivering essential recording metadata.
  • Long-term storage solutions: Guidelines to address archival challenges for content owners, helping them preserve and maintain their music assets.
  • Glossary of terms: An extensive list of professional audio terms and their meanings.

The latest recommendations build on the work initiated by the Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing in collaboration with the AES Technical Committee on Studio Practices and Production and the AES Nashville Section. The original Delivery Recommendations were first introduced in 2002, with subsequent updates in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2013, and 2018. This latest revision was finalized in spring 2024 to reflect the evolving needs of the industry.

"With our 2025 recommendations, we're addressing the industry's need for clarity and sustainability in managing music assets," stated Maureen Droney. "By ensuring original mix elements are accessible, creating consistent folder structures, and focusing on long-term storage and metadata, content owners will be able to both preserve and creatively repurpose their work. This evolution of the Delivery Recommendations reflects two decades of commitment to best practices, built on the foundation laid by the Recording Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing and our dedicated AES partners."
