Original Score and Soundtrack Albums for
Critical Smash La La Land Mastered at The Bakery

– Hit film is currently nominated for six Golden Globe awards,
including Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("City of Stars") –

LOS ANGELES, CA, December 22, 2016 – With the buzz building leading up to awards season 2017, certain movies are rising to the top of critics’ shortlists. Among the favorites is La La Land, a modern musical starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend and others. The movie has been praised nearly universally, with many critics citing its musical numbers and score as particular highlights. The film is currently nominated for six Golden Globe awards, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("City of Stars"). Composer Justin Hurwitz has previously worked with the movie’s director, Damien Chazelle, and they again came together to bring this triumph into theaters. Hurwitz scored the film and wrote the music for its musical numbers, and the lyrics were composed by musical theater duo Pasek and Paul. All of the music ended up being recorded at the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage at the historic Sony Pictures Studios. For mastering the material, producer Marius deVries and Music Mixer/Score Recordist Nicholai Baxter looked no further than mastering facility The Bakery – also located on the Sony Pictures lot. The Bakery founder and chief engineer Eric Boulanger, along with assistant engineer Jett Galindo, mastered both the Original Soundtrack album and the score album for all formats, including vinyl.

Both Baxter and Hurwitz were present at the mastering session, which occurred under a bit of a time crunch leading up to the movie’s release. Boulanger recalls, “This is a very dynamic, energetic movie, and the albums needed to capture the raw energy that you see on screen and hear in a theater. ‘Energetic’ was the word that they communicated to us multiple times. We had worked with Marius and Nicholai on a previous project – a Rufus Wainwright album – and it was tremendous fun working with these pros again. I love mastering rock, pop, and R&B, but I have a strong background in the classical world, so mastering orchestral and theatrical music is a real thrill for me.”

Commenting on his work with Boulanger at The Bakery, Nicholai Baxter stated, “Eric’s ability to work across any genre, his distinctive foundation as a talented violinist, and his technical mind make him a truly special mastering engineer. He was able to preserve and reinforce all the power and the delicacies contained in the La La Land soundtracks. I trust his ears implicitly with any project.”
